About

The Center for Russian and East European Studies was founded in 1971 by one of the most prominent Israeli historians, Prof. Michael Confino (1926-2010). In 1990 the Center’s activity was considerably expanded thanks to the generous donation of Jack Cummings of Montreal, former Chairman of the Board of Governors and a prominent benefactor of the University.

In the course of its over forty years of existence the CummingsCenter became the hub of research on Russia and Eastern-Central Europe at Tel Aviv University and an integral part o the international community of Slavic Studies. The Cummings Center’s academic staff includes experts on Russian and Slavic history, literature and languages. Their research explores the social and cultural life of the fascinating region where, among others, the founding fathers of the State of Israel were born.

Acting within the frameworks of the Zvi Yavetz School of Historical Studies, the Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies, and the Israeli Academic Partnership in Russian and East European Studies, the Cummings Center initiates, conducts and sponsors a wide variety of research projects as well as organizing international conferences and research workshops. Alongside our commitment to scholarly excellence, we see our foremost mission as promoting young talent. Senior researchers of the Cummings Center support and supervise research students from their first steps in the study of the field to the completion of their Ph.D.

As part of the Israeli and international academic community, we are always open to new ideas – you are welcome to contact us if you have any suggestions and/or questions. We will be happy to hear from you!

Dr. Vera Kaplan

Director of the Cummings Center for Russian and East European Studies
