Prof. Shlomo Raz 1936-1999
Prof. Shlomo, a world renowned scholar of Ethiopian languages and modern Arabic dialects, was born in Tiberias in 1936.
Prof. Raz trained in linguistics in Jerusalem and London. He received a B.A. in General Linguistics and Semitic languages from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he mainly studied under Prof. H. J. Polotsky (1968). His doctoral dissertation, a grammar of the Tigre language based on fieldwork he conducted in Eritrea, was written at the School of Oriental and African Studies under the supervision of Prof. Edward Ullendorf (1974).
Between 1972 and 1999, he taught in a number of departments in Tel Aviv University: the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Arabic Language and Arabic Literature, and the Department of Semitic Linguistics in its various phases. He was Head of the Department of Hebrew Language and Semitic Linguistic between 1995 and 1997, and he headed the Teaching Committee of the Faculty of the Humanities.
He passed away tragically at 63.
