Helge Kragh, University of Ahrhus, Niels Bohr's Theory of Atoms and Molecules: The Role of Experiment
Monday, 5/11/2012, 18:00-19:30
Gilman Building, room 449
The development of Niels Bohr’s theory of atomic structure illustrates the fertility of a close connection between experiment and theory, and it also illustrates the complex role played by empirical successes and anomalies in theory testing. After a general introduction to Bohr’s theory, I will focus on the way in which it was tested and the role of anomalies in the declining phase of the theory. How did the overall experimental situation affect physicists’ evaluation of the theory and its subsequent transition to the new quantum mechanics?
