"Animals and Religion in Asia," Tel Aviv University, May, 2018

Conference Announcement: "Animals and Religion in Asia," Tel Aviv University, 2-3 November 2018. The conference is open to the public.

Theme: Filling a gap in the global history of the human interaction with non-human animals, this conference will examine the representations, roles, and attitudes towards beasts in Asian religions, with a special emphasis upon China.  The papers presented will explore wide-ranging topics, including the transcendental associations of given species (such as monkeys); the flourishing cults of animal tutelary deities (which protected draft animals); animal sacrifices, and dietary taboos (prohibiting the consumption of meat in general, or the flesh of given species in particular).  Finally, the conference will address the theological standing of animals: Does the concept of transmigration create an affinity between human and non-human animals?  Are beasts capable of salvation?

"Thinking in Many Tongues," Tel Aviv University, November, 2017

Conference Announcement: "Thinking in Many Tongues," Tel Aviv University, 2-3 November 2017. The conference is open to the public.

Theme:  This reading seminar, running over two years in 2016–17, brings together around a dozen historians and philologists with diverse kinds of linguistic expertise to discuss the relation between plurilingualism and the creation and reception of monolingual and plurilingual texts in various Eurasian societies. The seminar is based on the collaborative work of a constant group of participants, occasionally joined by specially invited guests. The participants are not in residence at the Institute, but convene periodically. Through joint readings and translation, the seminar explores how the text is affected by its origin in a plurilingual society and, conversely, the effect plurilingualism has on reading practices and on a "polyglot’s" understanding of the text (its concepts and ideals).

Tel Aviv University, November 2-3, 2017, organized by Roy Tzohar.
