It is a truism in the history of technology that book print profoundly transformed the generation, representation and circulation of knowledge. But whereas the content of the printed book is exclusively directed towards human readers, the content of the digital text is also accessible to machinized „readers“. Thus one has to reflect on whether the printed book has a future in a digital environment, and if so, what role that could and should be. Could it serve as a boundary object, integrating different cultures, practices and values? Or should we regard it as a vaccine against the arbitrariness of the web?
